Meet Robert, Seth, and the other kids at The Center, a school for at-risk and troubled youth, as they contend with mental illness, institutionalism, and the rocky onset of sexual maturity. Hyped up, confused, angry, and afraid, their stories--told in a collection of diary entries, staff notes, and "run stories"--invite the readers into the troubled minds of kids who have been left behind. In the hands of author Daniel Hales, their voices reveal authentic narratives of loneliness and isolation that are both hilarious and emotionally raw.

"The kids at The Center appear at times to be students, at times to be patients, at times to be inmates. They are molting. Or maybe dreaming of molting. The book is both heartbreaking and comedic, immersing the reader in a world of chaos but also progress, and sometimes even transcendence" --Michael Earl Craig,
